Description

The Elements that Bind Us: The Lyrical Journey That Guides Us.

In Kwakwakawakw Culture, all origin stories begin with a mythical being who descended from the heavens and created the life we know today.

It was said in early creation times that some of these beings descended from the Moon. The Moon is a very significant symbol in cultures as it represents balance. When the Raven in early times of creation gave light to the world, Raven said “Live life in the balance of day and night, with each sunrise give gratitude, but let go of yesterday for we can’t control what has already passed.” The Raven is a magical being for it was the messenger from the universe. Raven created plants for medicines and taught us as humans the importance of community, unity and nourishment through feasting.

The great Thunderbird is also a mythical being who descended from the sun, the Thunderbird is the element of fire. It is said in ancient wartimes that the Thunderbird could shoot lighting from its eyes and when it flapped its wings it could create the rumbling sounds of thunder.

The Sisiutl or Double headed serpent is the ying and yang in culture. Like ancient myth stories of the Greeks this being also had the ability to turn people to stone if you looked at it directly in the eyes. But if you knew it to be there and didn’t look at it in the eyes it could bring you luck. The double headed serpent is often seen above doorways to protect and restore the balance of good and bad energy.

All the elements created within this design are about guidance, strength, enlightenment and balance. The gravitational pull of the Moon will always remind us of our journeys in life, and the double headed serpent is there to keep us balanced on our journeys, that we may have protection and move with a vision. The Raven reminds us to manifest all that is good, while also letting go of the things that do not serve our higher good. The Thunderbird, who gives us fire, warmth, and strong determination, protects us while gifting us strength. So as we move through time and space, also, that we may reveal our own thunderous presence in the beauty all life brings to this planet.
